Resources on the Internet make it possible for family history researchers to self-publish their own family histories, reference materials, and other works.

Genealogy Books - Out of Print, Hard-To-Find



In a previous post, I noted that online research is a useful way to find books published by genealogical and historical societies. Some websites and blogs also make available collections of out of print books that they have unearthed.

One site, Genealogy Books Online, offers a fee-based subscription service to family history researchers. Subscribers may read the collection of genealogy books, family histories, and biographies online. The site’s blog provides information on additions to the collection.

Also available to family history researchers are online collections, such as the works available at Gutenberg.org, of books in the public domain.

Genealogical and historical societies are making good use of blogs and websites to inform family history researchers about the availability of genealogy books and other reference materials.

A fine example is the Irish Roots Cafe. the Irish Genealogical Foundation’s website. The books published by the Foundation — covering topics such as Irish families, the Irish in America, and Irish place names and surnames — may be purchased through the Foundation’s website. The Irish Roots Cafe blog, authored by Michael O’Laughlin, keeps readers apprised of the latest additions to the Foundation’s collection of works on Irish genealogy and family history.
